Stripes

I find my self trying to balance the round flowing shapes with the angular grid shapes.


So I have added most of the straight pieces in the opposite corner.


When I got that done, I recessed another circle all the way down to the floor. and filled it with a red and white pattern.

I haven't 'rusted-up' many of the nail-heads yet and there is still some touch-up here and there.



The pictures are a good tool to see what needs doing to make it more realistic.

Licence Plates

I was thinking about the things that I have seen people put on the sides of old buildings like that.


One of my earliest memories were of the black and white Tennessee state-shaped
license plates hanging on my granpaw's shed. So we looked them up on the internet since my memory of 1949 is not that good.



I also remembered the saw blades he had hanging up. They were rusty. This piece is an experiment in rusting and ageing.

Window

This piece is becoming a still life. I made a window frame using the matboard in the same way that a real window would be constructed. I put several layers of different colored paint on it and then scraped parts off when they had dried.



I used a piece of thin clear plastic packaging to make the 'glass'.

Pipes and Sign

I installed the meter.


and added some joints, and fittings. Then I put in some vent piping


I also wasn't quite happy with the meter and made the bolts on the front plate 3d. I installed a sign, and rusted up the new pipes and joints.

I'm cutting out shapes from foamboard to make a gas meter shape.


I drew the dials, and made a cover from some clear plastic.


The meter in place.

Going to install the gas lines tomorrow.

The Wall

I have laid out my 'tin' sheets to make a wall for a background.


Then I installed a large pipe


and tried to make it look rusty.

The new component is done inside

The new component is finished on the inside and put in the box

Another Element

Haint has made another mechanical element for the new box.














Various shapes are put into the box to find the vision for the piece.

The Bottom and Insides

The piece left from cutting out the wall top can be used to reinforce the bottom.









Or it can be cut out and installed at a higher level to show the lower layers.
For the mandalas, Haint draws and paints the mandala design on this piece then cuts it out and installs it in different layers using stair step like supports.





The inside of this box was painted a dark gold.

Making the Cover for the Top of the Wall

Measure and cut out the top cover for the walls from a rectangle the same size as the bottom of the box.








Lay the top cover over the wall.










Check to make sure it fits well.













Then hang it up until the project is finished.

The Installing the Walls

The walls have dried overnight.

Haint stands them up on the base/bottom rectangle.
Make sure that they are as perpendicular as possible.









Each wall must dry about 1 to 1.5 hours. before the next one is added.










The last wall is in place and sets to dry for a few hours.








The inner walls are added to the box.

Tip: Haint uses a square scrap of matboard to smooth out the glue that seeps from the joints before it dries.

The Outer Walls

The ribs are glued perpendicular to the inside of the outer wall strips.











The ribs are spaced at roughly 1.5" - being closer together toward the end/corners.











The four outer walls now all have ribs glued to the inner side.












They set up to dry overnight.

A New Box

Haint has started another box to fill up.
The first thing to do is to cut a rectangle of thick matboard for the base/bottom part.

Haint's rectangle is 12" x 24.25"






The shadowboxes are made with a double wall. Haint wants his box to be 1.5" deep.

So he cuts out long strips that are 1.5 inches wide.
These are for the inner and outer walls.










Haint lays out 1" x 1.5" ribs to make 1 inch between the inner and outer walls.







A papercutter makes the production of a lot of ribs fast and easy.
